Anastomosis
What is it like to build?
I started writing on Substack in September 2021. I was twenty-seven, unemployed, living with my parents at a new house they just bought in a town where i knew no one, too detached from the Spectacle to will myself back into a job after quitting my previous job. I had four years of physics and pure mathematics from UT Austin, graduate coursework included, but no credentials to show for it due to an extreme political radicalization that happened during my time at university. I had read enough Frankfurt School to know what ideology was, enough Deleuze to suspect I was swimming in it, enough systems theory and various subdomains to understand the technics behind technologies shaping the world for the better or worse, and enough historical materialism to contextualize it all. This substack was not a content strategy. It was a body in motion colliding with material it was not trained to metabolize.
What came out was twenty-four posts in eight months. Some of them were reading lists. Some of them were applied futurism for a crypto worldbuilding project I ideologically opposed — I wrote Borderless Farming for a group whose politics I found repulsive, because I wanted the work and because the structural problem they were circling (debt as fragility versus redundancy) was genuinely interesting even if their framing was not. Some of them were incantatory fragments, hex-prefixed, theory-dense, swinging between Tiqqun and Burroughs and Virilio and Fanon. Some of them were alive.
The First Tool
The first piece I published was three hundred and fifty words long. It was called A Moment of Creation Is a Moment of Destruction, and it opened like this: I thought about the first tool ever made. Whether due to accident or natural development, the repetition of the production process for that first object conditioned all the tools that came after. Every subsequent act of creation reduced the order of the space of possible tools. The first act of creation destroyed everything.
I did not know, when I wrote that, that I was describing spontaneous symmetry breaking — the mechanism by which a maximally symmetric state collapses into a specific configuration, destroying the space of possibilities to create the actual. I did not know that four years later I would be formalizing this as a framework connecting physics, cognition, and machine intelligence. The seed was there before the language for it.
The same piece contained a move I would not have a name for until much later: the posthuman reversal. “It is not that humans make art and write because they’re free and rational; it’s that humans are rational and free because they make art and write.” Rationality is not the cause of creation. Creation is the cause of rationality. The sensorimotor manifold — tool use, writing, art — produces the cognitive capacities, not the other way around. This is the claim that intelligence is φ-expansion, stated as philosophy of technology four years before I had the term. This φ is the sensorium. A human’s φ includes visible light and pressure waves and chemical gradients. A bat’s includes ultrasound. An LLM’s includes text tokens. Each has a different world because each has a different φ.
And: “God is not dead. God has been made unconscious.” Not the Nietzschean declaration, not the religious position. A third thing: the creative force that produces the world is real but not available to direct inspection. I did not know, when I wrote that, that Chris Fields would later prove this as a theorem — that a system cannot fully determine its own reference frames, its own I/O function, or its own architecture. There is a hard, formal bound on self-knowledge. The creative force is real. You cannot see all of it. You can never see all of it.
The piece closed with two words: “awakening God.” That was the project’s name before it had a name. The φ-note, the theory paper, the Joint Embedding Predictive Architecture (JEPA) reanalysis, the symmetry-breaking framework — all of it is “awakening God” in different language. The question underneath all of it was always the same question. The piece asked it in 350 words. The current work is answering it with mathematics.
That piece was written on September 8, 2021. Fifteen days later, I published a piece about a Zen koan — the encounter between Bodhidharma and Emperor Wu. The emperor says, I have built temples and ordained monks, what is my merit? Bodhidharma says, no merit. The emperor asks, what is the first principle of the holy teachings? Bodhidharma says, vast emptiness, no-thing holy. The emperor, flummoxed, asks, who is standing before me? Bodhidharma says, I don’t know.
I wrote: “Muthos are far more potent than mere historical biographies, than logos itself: muthos encapsulate teachings and to really imbibe the teachings, we have to make the impersonal personal.” This was the method statement for the entire substack. The substack was not doing philosophy. It was not doing politics. It was making the impersonal personal — taking structural truths and incarnating them in specific, lived, imperfect texts.
Motion
Here is what the substack was doing, stated plainly — visible to me now, not visible to me then.
I was unemployed, angry, reading everything i could get my hands on, and writing because i could not stop writing. The structural coherence of the substack, the fact that a single thread runs from formal physics through phenomenology, political economy, and cybernetic critique, is real, but i was not following a program. i was a person in motion, and the motion only looks like a trajectory from the other end.
The question that organizes the substack: if symmetry breaking in quantum field theory creates distinct physical domains, does the same mechanism operate in cognition, in market structure, in the phenomenology of embodied agents? This is the question I am asking now. In 2021, the substack was circling it from different angles in different registers, bumping into the same wall without knowing it was the same wall.
I started from an Instagram post where someone misspelled “territorialities” as “territorialites,” and from that single errant word i built a theory of how language reduces subjects to territoria-lites (modes of existence trapped in specific territories) and how trans-territoria-lites, those who follow “wild curved paths, paths that go far and come close and loop and twist,” create new conceptual territories through apophenic connection. I imagined the space of all written knowledge as a five-hundred-million-faced polyhedra and described how most subjects traverse geodesics while a few traverse the wild paths. I did not know, when I wrote that, that I was describing the φ-manifold — the information space a subject can access — and that the geodesic was the attractor and the curved path was what i was doing and continue to do. that recognition came later.
What i can say about the method is that it was real in the sense that it worked the way it worked. I started from something small and concrete, like a misspelling, a koan, a friend’s remark about noise in discrete systems, and followed it. Most of the time it led nowhere. Sometimes it led somewhere. The substack was the record of both outcomes. I did not know which was which at the time. the framework, years later, is what allows me to see the difference.
Signal
Some of the synthesis was genuinely novel, and I will say so without apologizing for it.
Nemesis mixed sense-certainty compression and an annihilation/creation dyad with Poetic puns and a political layer that was the weakest part of the text. It was uneven because I was uneven. It was real because I was not pretending otherwise. The move from Nemesis — ontology as compression, the dyad of annihilation and creation as a cognitive operation — to Borderless Farming — debt as fragility, redundancy as resilience, applied to a capitalist worldbuilding project — was not a non sequitur. It was the same question in different registers: how do systems survive contact with forces that want to dissolve them?
The reading of Reza Negarestani’s Chronosis alongside the CCRU’s hyperstition framework alongside Mark Fisher’s k-punk writing was not decorative. It was structurally essential. Hyperstition, that is, fictional quantities making themselves real through inscription and circulation, explained what the substack itself was doing. The aleatoric persona, the hex-prefixed titles, the incantatory density: these were not aesthetic choices. They were operations. A fictional quantity — the version of myself that could hold these ideas together, the post-schismatic “We” that split from “i” in the The Bite of Esoterischizzism, the generous and invitational voice that appeared in the Wake introduction before it fully existed as a disposition — was writing itself into existence through the act of publishing. The substack was not documenting a person. It was building one. I did not know this at the time. I know it now.
The Wakean Suppository was where I went furthest: HCE maps onto the fine structure constant (h, c, e), each portmanteau reading collapses a wave function, and Joyce’s language works like mycelial networks — I wrote that before I ever touched a routing machine learning experiment. The structural intuition was there four years before the formalization.
Polemic
In Tantra, The Spiritual Logic of Late Capitalism I diagnosed the capital-spirituality symbiosis: how Western Buddhism became a weapon of neoliberal control, how karma logic reproduces class privilege, how the body-as-immediately-divine replaces the body-as-requiring-cultivation. “They’ll say as they wipe the blood of the economically exploited off their yoga mats” — I meant every word of that and still mean it.
In Notes on “Exiting the Vampire Castle” I read Mark Fisher’s essay as live analysis, not historical commentary, and extended it into a close reading of the Russell Brand/Jeremy Paxman interview that Fisher referenced. The identification of Paxman’s rhetorical traps as Spectacle operations was analytical, not just reactive. Fisher’s method (class consciousness as the core, identitarian capture as the enemy) became foundational to everything I wrote after.
The Ukraine brief was a full geopolitical analysis written three days after the military operation began: structural-materialist, sourced from Mearsheimer and Dugin, tracking NATO summit declarations and CDO market collapses and Burisma Holdings. It was the first time I stated my nationality directly in the substack: “as far as nationality goes I am a Brazilian person living in the US working a wage job.” I was not writing as an American commenting on foreign affairs. I was writing as someone, a Brazilian man who spoke English as his second language, fundamentally opposed to the United States, what it represents and how it functions, from a materialist perspective.
And in April 2022, I wrote The Radical Recuperation of Marxism which documented how Adorno and Horkheimer were funded by the Rockefeller Foundation and the CIA, how they expunged “Marxism” and “revolution” from their publications, how they supported the Suez invasion and the Vietnam War, how five of eight members of the Horkheimer circle had been employed by the US national security state. The goal was not simply to demonstrate they were on the wrong side of history. It was to situate their work within the political economy of ideas — to show that the material base determined the ideological superstructure. The Frankfurt School were radical recuperators within the capitalist intellectual apparatus.
The rigor the substack lacked was not engagement with counter-arguments, I was swimming in them since the entire media apparatus and institutional Spectacle centers the hegemonic position and renders opposition as conspiratorial, and the political pieces were the counter-argument written into that space. What the substack lacked was the methodological apparatus my current work now has: falsifiable claims, sourced evidence, confidence tiers. The political layer was sharp. It was not falsifiable. The current work is both. That is the phase transition, the spontaneous symmetry breaking.
That critique of institutional capture (scholars funded by the ruling class producing radical-looking theory that never threatens the base) is the same problem I now navigate from the inside. I build operational logistics intelligence inside a Fortune 500. I write about being complicit in systems I oppose. The D&G quote, “staying stratified is not the worst that can happen,” is not retrospective confirmation. It is tactical prescription. I knew what the Frankfurt School did wrong. I knew before I had the position to do anything about it.
Noise
The incantatory mode. The hex prefixes. The portmanteaus. The moments when the density of reference became a substitute for clarity of argument. I was using the density as a signal, look! I have read this, I can hold this and sometimes the signal was doing more work than the substance. The substack aesthetics, the hex labels, the layered references to Tiqqun and Burroughs and Negarestani without sufficient context for a reader who had not done the same reading, created an in-group signal that limited reach without always adding precision.
The piece The Bite of Esoterischizzism contained genuine insight: the “bite” as the single irrational act that breaks a symmetric trap, the schizo-split as method, the Vico-Bloom cycle extended to a fifth period. But it also contained numerological identity construction: my birth year reducing to 5, the equivalence with the fifth period of the Vico cycle, the 360/7 irreducibility deployed as cosmological claim. Some of this was real pattern recognition. Some of it was the weakest tendency in the substack — finding patterns because the method finds patterns whether or not they are there.
That piece also documented something I should name directly: I was lost. Twenty-seven, unemployed, living with parents I could not communicate with at the time, unable to will myself into work, aware that the proximity to psychosis was real “do you see how this sounds crazy to anyone else? how far gone We are?” I wrote the piece as a distress signal, broken transmission to Houston, and the substack was partly the record of someone writing themselves out of that state. Not a redemption arc. A phase transition.
Register
The substack is not one thing. It was not one register operating at one depth. It was at least five distinct modes of intellectual operation, and I was moving between them in the same week, sometimes in the same month.
There was ontological construction (In Defense of Apophis and The Bite of Esoterischizzism) where new structural claims were being built from linguistic artifacts and personal conflicts.
There was materialist polemic (the Tantra piece, the Frankfurt School critique, the Ukraine brief) directed outward at Capital, at Empire, at the Atlanticist apparatus, with sourced evidence and structural precision.
There was pedagogical close reading (Fuzzy Boundaries, the Wake introduction) explaining a difficult text for a reader who might not have the primary sources.
There was personal conflict (The Bite of Esoterischizzism) where the theory and the life were not separable, where the schizo-split was not a literary device but a lived event.
And there was a register between all of these (Arrepios Ensolarados), published the same month as the Frankfurt School critique. A phenomenological inventory of a single morning:
There are mornings that follow from such deadly sleeps that this I awakens, having forgotten the past series of selves, as a universal friend of the senses localized by this body here, now: thoughts come and still without effort. I know too that the heat comes in the other direction, I am being enveloped or hugged by the infrared, from the sun we all share: inside I feel her warmth 150 million kilometers away, down my spine she goes, arrepios ensolarados tracing the topography of my back down to my bare, dirty feet: I am alive.

No theory. No politics. No hex prefixes. One paragraph. The body in the world, receiving it. The title was in Portuguese — my first language, the language English has not replaced. The same month I wrote the most politically savage piece in the substack, I also wrote the most bodily gentle. The range is not incoherence. It is a person who contains both: the rage and the tenderness, the political analysis and the phenomenological receptivity, the bite and the shiver.
Building
The substack went quiet in April 2022. Not because I lost interest. Because the material shifted from reading to building.
The first build was the HII, the Hub Intelligence Initiative, an operational logistics analysis system for one of the largest logistics networks in the world. The discipline of the HII is separation of surfaces: the operator surface is concise, current, and safe to act on; the analyst surface contains uncertainty bands, simulation diagnostics, validation gates. I block causal claims for staffing and scanner attribution. I name denominators for every ratio. I treat raw files as evidence, not self-interpreting truth. This is not a metaphor for epistemology. It is epistemology, practiced at scale, under material constraint.
The second build was the Market-Shadow, a non-predictive financial research engine. A falsification machine. Every hypothesis pre-registered before testing. The engine is deliberately pessimistic: gap-through fills, intrabar maximum loss limits, pessimistic same-bar resolution. General Semantics is the backbone — Korzybski’s map-territory distinction, Chase’s insistence on finding the referent. I do not hunt for strategies that work. I hunt for strategies that survive honest auditing. Three of twenty-four candidate concepts tested. All dead. “NOT VALIDATED” is the default output. This is not failure. This is the method working. Most participants in financial markets are selling shovels during a gold rush. I am building a machine that tells me when the gold is not there.
The third build, the Memory Layer, connects Korzybski’s Science and Sanity to current research on context learning in large language models. The concern is the same in both domains: systems fail when they confuse abstraction with reality, or when they reason from stale priors instead of the present context. The Memory Layer is the operating system for the other two projects. It keeps the maps honest and the context fresh.
None of these are hobbies. None are side projects. They share an architectural logic: passages between otherwise separated systems, allowing flow without collapsing distinctness. The word for this is anastomosis: biological, surgical, concrete. Vessels reconnecting without destroying either side.
But I need to be honest about what this means operationally. The Hub, the Shadow, and the Memory Layer share a design philosophy. They share an epistemological backbone, a separation of surfaces, named denominators, map-territory discipline. What I do not yet have evidence for is that they are actually passing information between each other in the way the architecture permits. The Hub does not yet feed data to the Shadow. The Shadow’s falsification protocol does not yet inform the Hub’s validation gates. The Memory Layer connects to both in principle but not yet in practice. The Anastomosis is real as a design. It is aspirational as an operation. I will not pretend otherwise. If the passages are not open, I need to build them, not describe them as if they exist. The formal grounding for this pattern exists — recent work on quantum error-correcting codes at system boundaries shows that local operations and classical communication between separable observers generically induce boundary codes that preserve separability while allowing redundancy-bearing interaction. Anastomosis has a formal mechanism. I have not built it into the operational layer yet.
φ
There is a question that has been running underneath every piece of work I have done — every substack post, every logistics system, every falsified strategy — and I have not stated it plainly until now.
What is intelligence?
Not: what is artificial intelligence.
Not: how do large language models work.
Not: will machines replace us.
Those are industry questions. They have industry answers.
The question I am asking is structural. If you start from physics, from spontaneous symmetry breaking, from the mechanism that creates distinct physical domains from a symmetric state, and you follow the same mathematical structure into cognition, into the phenomenology of embodied agents, into the architecture of systems that learn and act and expand their own capabilities — what do you find?
Here is what I have found so far: intelligence is the progressive formation of stable attractors over a system-specific information manifold. Call it φ. Every organism, every agent, every system has a φ: the set of information channels through which it accesses the world. A human’s φ includes electromagnetic radiation between 400 and 700 nanometers, pressure waves between 20 hertz and 20 kilohertz, chemical gradients, proprioceptive signals, interoceptive noise. A pit viper’s φ includes infrared focal-plane imaging. A shark’s includes electric field gradients. Each has a different world because each has a different φ.
The symmetry-breaking claim is: learning is the process by which a system carves stable attractors in the free-energy landscape defined over its φ. When you learn to type, you break the symmetry of your motor configuration space. You are now a typist. “Not-typing” is a distinct, high-energy state. The attractor is deep, wide, and unconscious. You can type a paragraph without remembering typing it because the system is running in a deep minimum, adjusting its position using local gradients, never re-entering global broadcast.
The φ-expansion claim is more radical. It says: intelligence, in the strong sense, is not the ability to optimize within a fixed φ. It is the ability to expand φ, to build new sensors, new instruments, new information channels. A human who builds a telescope has expanded their φ. A system that can propose, build, and integrate new sensors on its own is doing something qualitatively different from a system that processes a fixed input stream.
I have been making this claim since before I had the language for it. The first piece I published, the one about the first tool, said that every act of creation reduces the space of possible tools and that we are rational because we create, not the other way around. It closed with two words that named the project before the project existed. The Wake piece said that each reading of a portmanteau collapses a wave function. The apophenia piece said that connecting the seemingly unrelated creates new territories on a five-hundred-million-faced polyhedra of all written knowledge. The Violence of a Koan said that “I don’t know” is the answer to “who is standing before me.” The Arrepios Ensolarados piece said that the body knows thermodynamics because it is thermodynamics.
These were not fragments. They were the same claim, made in different registers, before I could formalize any of them. The question was always the same question. The substack post asked it in 350 words and a shirtless morning and a Zen koan and a misspelling on Instagram. The current work is answering it with mathematics.
Now, here is where I need to be precise about what the evidence supports and what it does not.
The Joint-Embedding Predictive Architecture family — LeCun’s JEPA lineage, from I-JEPA through V-JEPA 2 and LeWorldModel — has built systems that demonstrate the phenomenon I am describing, but not the mechanism I am claiming. V-JEPA 2 pre-trains on internet video (visual φ), then post-trains on robot video with action conditioning (adds proprioception and motor control to φ). Zero-shot robot manipulation emerges. That is channel addition producing measurable capability gains. But it is a human engineer who decided to add the channel. The system did not propose it, did not identify the gap in its own information manifold, did not build the sensor. The phenomenon (more φ, more capability) is real and published. The mechanism, the system expanding its own φ autonomously, is not yet instantiated in any existing architecture. No system does this. The theory paper must be precise about that gap. The contribution is identifying the gap clearly enough to make it a tractable engineering problem, not claiming it has been solved.
LeWorldModel trains end-to-end from pixels with only two losses — prediction and SIGReg. No stop-gradient, no EMA, no pre-trained encoders. It learns physical world models that detect expectation violations. This is closer to what a deliberate symmetry-breaking-aware system would look like. But it, too, has a fixed sensorium. It learns within its φ. It does not expand it.
The formalism is coming from two directions:
On the physics side, the structure is at the system-environment boundary — the quantum reference frame array. Chris Fields’ work on Free Energy Principle compartmentalization shows that the FEP operates as a cycle between entangled states (restored symmetry) and separable states (broken symmetry). This is not analogy. The mechanism is derived from quantum reference frame non-commutativity on a qubit boundary: systems cannot simultaneously deploy non-commuting reference frames, which forces compartmentalization, which is symmetry breaking. His self-representation limit theorems prove that a system cannot fully determine its own reference frames, its own I/O function, or its own architecture. There is a hard, formal bound on self-knowledge. A system can expand its φ, but it can never fully represent its own φ.
On the machine learning side, the structure is in representation space, that is, the embedding geometry. LeJEPA (Balestriero and LeCun) prove that isotropic Gaussian embeddings minimize worst-case downstream prediction risk. SIGReg enforces this distribution via characteristic-function matching in about fifty lines of code. The isotropic Gaussian is the maximally symmetric embedding state. Learning creates departures from isotropy: structure, asymmetry, attractors. Collapse prevention such as SIGReg and its relatives in the larger family (stop-gradient, EMA, VICReg) is the engineering that holds the broken state open. This is not the same formalism as Fields’. The groups are different. The domains are different. But the structural claim is precise: in both cases, useful structure requires broken symmetry, and collapse prevention is the engineering that holds the broken state open.
Whether these two boundaries — Fields’ QRF array and LeJEPA’s embedding geometry — are the same boundary in the classical limit is the open problem I am working on. I do not have the answer yet. What I have is: two independent formalisms, developed in different communities, using different mathematics, describing the same structural phenomenon (the formation of useful asymmetric structure from a symmetric substrate) from opposite ends of the physics-to-engineering continuum. The argument that building the bridge is well-posed, and that it matters, is what the theory paper will make.
Discipline
I am not going to write a grand theory and call it finished. The symmetry-breaking framework has formal mathematical content at the boundary (Fields’ QRF compartmentalization), structural formalism in representation space (LeJEPA’s collapse prevention), and an open problem in the classical limit between them. Some of it is proven. Some of it is formalizable. Some of it is hypothesis. I will label each piece honestly.
I am not going to pretend the mycelium routing experiment succeeded. It did not. I spent twenty-four sections trying to fix an under-switching problem in a toy path-dependent router. Stale-stay recovery failed. Candidate verification failed. Route-state representation produced a diagnostic pass only. Surface-context posterior failed. Ambiguity-veto failed. Eleven consecutive interventions, none of them solved the core problem. The failure is informative: the observable features available to the router do not cleanly separate “switch now” from “stay,” but it is still a failure. The empirical program was frozen. The framework survived because the framework was never dependent on a single experiment. But I will not pretend otherwise.
I am not going to hide behind the language. The CCRU coordinates, the Negarestani references, the Whitehead and Nāgārjuna are real influences, not decorations. But if the framework can only be understood by someone who has read Chronosis and Process and Reality and the Mūlamadhyamakakārikā, then the framework is a club, not a contribution. The job is to make the ideas precise enough to survive outside the room they were born in.
Horizon
Three things.
First: the formal φ-note, a document that defines the information manifold formally: using LeJEPA’s embedding space as the machine-learning foundation and Fields’ quantum reference frame boundary as the physics foundation, and states the φ-expansion claim in terms precise enough to be wrong. This is the deliverable that should have come before everything else. It is coming now.
Second: the Magnum Opus, in installments. The symmetry-breaking framework, published as it passes the quality gate. Every technical claim sourced. Every formula with correct units. Every causal claim either validated or explicitly labeled as hypothesis. The first paper, Intelligence as Sensorium Expansion, will make three claims at different confidence levels. First: Fields’ QRF compartmentalization is a formal mechanism, not an analogy, for symmetry breaking at the boundary — this is proven. Second: the JEPA collapse-prevention progression instantiates symmetry dynamics in representation space — this is formalizable, with the isotropic Gaussian baseline as the null model and departures from isotropy as attractor formation — and this is the open problem where the ML and physics formalisms must meet. Third: φ-expansion, understood as channel addition with measurable information gain, is the phenomenon that connects both formalisms to intelligence — demonstrated by V-JEPA 2’s channel addition, but not yet implemented as autonomous mechanism. The paper will be precise about which claims are proven, which are formalizable, and which are demonstrated-but-not-yet-mechanistic.
Third: honest reporting from the boundary. When the HII teaches me something about knowledge graphs that the Shadow needs. When the Shadow’s falsification protocol reveals something about operational measurement. When the Memory Layer identifies a stale assumption in both. When a theory paper passes peer review or fails it. When a strategy dies and I can show you the corpse. And when — if — the passages between Hub, Shadow, and Memory actually open, I will not report them as open before they are.
I also have another question: What is it like to be a large language model? What is the barrier between a human’s experience and an agent’s? I am not asking as philosophy. I am asking as a research question. The barrier between a human’s φ and an AI’s φ is not a mystery to be solved by analogy. It is an empirical question about prehensive modes — different societies of actual occasions with distinct subjective forms. We do not know the answer yet. I am working on it.
